If You Don't Know Anything, Write Anyway

June, this is what a block plane looks like
We imagine that freelancers who write for sites like HubPages.com occasionally find themselves running out of topics. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to stop them from writing anyway: apparently, they simply glance up from the keyboard and write about the first thing they happen to see. At least that's what June Campbell, prolific contributor of Hubs (or maybe lenses), did, with an article she mistitled "Hand Tools for DIY Woodworking | Shop Supplies" – we say "mistitled" mainly because she never even mentions shop supplies.

Now, June doesn't actually give you wrong advice, although some of it's rather questionable; such as information like
"Woodworkers recommend getting a regular hacksaw rather than a junior one, and also to get a coping saw. With a coping saw, its easy to cut intricate shapes."
We mean, really: woodworkers recommend getting a hacksaw? We do? And what is it about coping saws that incompetents are always mentioning them? Some day we'll have to do a whole series on coping-saw stupidity...

Like we said, June doesn't give wrong advice, but what she does say makes it glaringly obvious that she's never picked up most of the tools she mentions, stupidities like

  • "Chisel[s]... are among the most versatile of any woodwork hand tool. Chisels are used to carve woods into desired shapes."
  • "If you work on larger woodworking projects frequently, then you might do well to invest in a powered saw."
  • "When choosing your utility knife, its best to avoid the ones with retractable blades and go with the kind that have the blade affixed with a screw."
  • "A block plane...is a simple, solid metallic block with a blade centered in the flat underside. As you apply it, the wood shavings eject out of the top, in a similar fashion to a pencil sharpener."
  • "Some woodworkers own two of these items. The larger one remains in the shop and the smaller one goes in the toolkit where it can be transported to project sites."
Give us a break, will you, June? Stick with writing about what you know, like crafts and recipes. Otherwise you look a lot like a Dumbass of the Day
