Quarrying Granite for Dummies

Vermont Granite Quarry
If someone were to ask you, "How do they make 2-by-4 boards?" we're pretty sure most people's answers would start out with something to the effect of "Cut down a tree." That's because most people out there know a 2-by-4 from a hole in the ground, as the saying goes. Apparently that's not the case with HomeSteady.com's Naima Manal, who fumbled the opening snap on the similar question "How is Granite Mined?"¹ Speaking of holes in the ground...

According to Naima (one of our favorite serial dumbasses, having been spotted plying her trade at HubPages as well),
"The first step performed in granite mining is to decide on the layout the granite quarry."
We haven't been able to parse that particular semi-sentence yet, have you? Whatever the case, Naima then goes on to tell us that,
"The granite is then cut to a workable size, once it is removed from the earth."
Just in case you missed it, Ms. Manal goes straight from "decide on the layout" to "cut to a workable size, once it is removed from the earth." All those quotes leave out are a couple of sentences about the shape of the granite body... OK, now, according to Google's online dictionary, the verb to mine means "dig in (the earth) for coal or other minerals." In other words, she went into great detail about slabbing and polishing granite for building stone, tiles, counter tops, and the like...

...but our Dumbass of the Day never actually mentions the mining process? Even by the erstwhile eHow.com's demonstrably loose standards, that's a pretty bad answer!
