Geothermal Energy for Dummies

For some weird reason, all the Leaf Group niche sites are offline today, so we've dug into our (lengthy) file of DotD candidates to find something from another fact -lite or -free website. Fortunately, that's not very hard when there's still content available at EzineArticles.com, content like the rubbish published by Mahfuza Ferdausi Urpa that he called "What Secrets Are Hidden in Our Planet About Geothermal History?"

We usually cut non-native English speakers like Urpa (he's from India) some slack for grammatical errors, but in this case we're gonna run roughshod over his post because it's pretty obvious that it's been spun, perhaps from a US Department of Energy website on the subject, among others. Even the title is suspect: "Hidden in Our Planet"? Yeah, sure... We figured that out from some of the strange constructions that only arise when a spinning algorithm grasps for synonyms:
  1. "Technological people have been working hard..."
  2. "...places that are deeper than ten miles underneath the exterior of the planet..."
  3. "...heat taken from the sub terrain depths of the earth..."
  4. "...there are areas, mainly in some portions of a lot of western states, where the the energy underneath is very superficial..."
Once our un-spinners had tackled those lines, they decided they translate to:
  1. Scientists are hard at work...
  2. ...ten miles or more below the surface...
  3. ...subterranean heat...
  4. ...[we give up]...
And then, of course, there's the scientific bogosity:
  • "...our planet was still in a wholly molten state, which then cooled off and solidified some thousand years ago..." – Umm, Dude, even Biblical literalists think the planet is more than 1000 years old!
  • "All of this is possible thanks to the knowledge gained from geothermal history..." – No, Mahfuza, that's not what "geothermal history" means!
Three cheers for our freelancing, scientifically illiterate content spinner! Urpa managed to check off three boxes on our nomination form, which means that he is woefully qualified to be our next Dumbass of the Day!
